Bibliotheca classica Petropolitana

Foundation

The Bibliotheca classica Petropolitana, a classics’ reference library, was founded in the year 1993 in St. Petersburg by Alexander Gavrilov, who in 1993 received the New Europe Prize, which was established by six American and European Institutes for Advanced Study.

Library

The Bibliotheca classica Petropolitana was established as a new independent research center with an effort to unite university scholars, teachers of the Gymnasium classicum Petropolitanum and research fellows from academic institutes of St. Petersburg. Since 1993 the library has acquired through gifts and purchased approximately 20 000 bibliographical units.

Publishing activities

The Bibliotheca classica publishes a biannual classical journal, ‘Hyperboreus’. Other publications of BiCL are an almanac ‘Ancient World and Us’ (1997, 2000, 2002), and annually since 2000 ‘Abaris’ (Magazine of Friends of the Gymnasium сlassicum Petropolitanum). In addition to periodicals the Bibliotheca classica is occupied with other editions.
